Q&A - Pedometers
Does it matter where the pedometer is placed or attached?
The HJ-150 and 151 Pedometer must be positioned correctly. Attach the unit to your belt or to the top of your waistband. The unit must be horizontal to the ground in order for the unit to function correctly. The HJ-112 and HJ-720ITC Pocket Pedometer can also be placed in your pocket or purse.

Omron Hj-720ITC Pedometer
This is the best pedometer I’ve had so far. It interfaces with the PC perfectly. It’s very user friendly and very much worth every bit of the price. I like mine so much I purchased another for my wife!

great
I bought for myself, my wife, and my daughter and we all love them as thet are accurate and have all of the infromation on the computer.

Fun While It Lasted
The Omron HJ-720ITC was more money than I wanted to spend for a pedometer, but the PC link software inspired me to go ahead and give it a try. The idea of monitoring your results on your computer daily seemed liked a good one, and to its credit, the software is fine. The unit itself, however, is typical junk. It worked fine till the first battery change then, the device that detects movement, i.e., counts your steps, just quit working. The display is just happily telling you as you walk for miles, that you are remaining completely motionless.
Save your money. Just walk for a specified time everyday and the money you save will buy you a lot of smoothies.

Great Product
Overall it’s a great product. Seems well constructed, can be carried just in your pocket (a big win), and it’s accurate. The USB connectivity struck a chord with me being somewhat of a geek. Not to mention the data it provides is wonderful. It works pretty much perfectly, so instead of listing the specs, I’ll focus on all the downsides I can find…
There are a few downsides, but nothing that’s a dealbreaker:
- Only Windows is supported by the software. Mac OS X would have been nice. Even better would be if they documented their protocol so anyone can build an application for it. Who knows, maybe they will.
- It detects “aerobic” activity, but doesn’t allow for a separate stride length to be used automatically. This is only a concern if you really want your mileage to be accurate. When you jog or run, your stride in naturally longer. The “hack” for this is to just go into setup and change it prior to jogging, then change it back. It’s an extra step, but not a huge issue.
- No hold button. Would be nice to be able to press a button and have it not count steps. Good for situations where you encounter vibration (car, bus, train). Doesn’t seem like it counts more than a handful in this situation, but it would still be a nice enhancement.
- Safety clip is a little weak. But you can put it on your pocket, so no big deal.
Overall, I’d buy it again.
